The Fat Spoon

everyone goes to Daikokuya in little tokyo. Last time Pauline and I went, we noticed a new restaurant next door. Not nearly the line or crowd. Totally different menu. But the menu looked..interesting. Curry, and japanese pasta. I’m not as into japanese pasta as pauline is. its too sweet. Anyway, months later, Pauline had a friday off of work, so we decided to try The Fat Spoon.  What a perfect day for us to go too. It was super rainy outside, so although the walk to the restaurant wasn’t awesome, the food was perfect for a rainy day!

We decided to split some stuff so that we could try things. First up – Curry fries. I know, sounds strange. Especially the cheese element. But I kinda loved them. It was like chili fries, but with japanese style curry. No meat, just the sauce, topped with cheese and a few jalapeno slices. yum.

Next up, we ordered the moco loco curry – regular heat (there are 4 levels ~i think~) MMMM – i LOVE gooey egg yolk on just about everything. Even better, the meat patty was more like a japanese hamburgu.  The regular heat was perfect – a slight spice, but still curry flavored. Definitely order again.

Then we went for the short rib curry. Now, we ordered all of this at the beginning, having no idea how hot things were. I read reviews on yelp complaining that it wasn’t hot enough, so we ordered the short rib curry one step hotter than regular.

OHMYFLIPPINGODTHISISHOT.  Just one “step” to the folks at the fat spoon, is in reality about 10 times higher. Those yelpers are damned dirty liars. I like heat. This was madness. Pauline couldn’t eat it. It was delicious, but too hot. And its a different heat than, say, mexican food. Its a slow, deep in your throat, makes your head feel numb from the inside out kinda heat. It’s a little intoxicating. But too hot. We took the leftovers home and tried to “dilute” it with more rice. But there is no diluting that. It’s just the way it is.

My recommendation, go with the regular heat. Its warm, but delicious. Not ear popping, and you can actually finish a meal. mmmmmm…curry!!!
