Ikebana 5/15/13 – Moribana Slanting Style

Sensei is still having us review styles that we haven’t done in a while. I chose Moribana Slanting style this time

subject is diameter + height of container, down 70°, 30° to the left – placed in a little back in kenzan

secondary is 1/2 subject, in the far back of the kenzan. Placed towards the left, then swung out in to make a “V” shape toward the left

tall filler is up to length of subject, placed between subject and secondary, taller than other flowers in this arrangement, but pulled toward subject

a filler is placed between subject and secondary

cascading filler is placed to right of subject

Object is 1/2 of subject, placed at 45° to the right, and 50° down to offset the low hanging subject

Pauline chose Moribana Upright

if object has a “fork” in the stem (as pauline’s does) the central point of the fork is where the degree down measurement is taken, not from either flower.

Sensei let us do freestyle again today…I thought I’d try something that we hadn’t learned in quite a while. Circular style.

subject (lily in back) – length is free

secondary (lily on left) is 2/3 – 1/2 subject

object (lily on right) is 1/2 to 1/3 subject

All stems are exiting the vase from the bottom left quadrant

subject is 2 times the height of vase, almost straight

secondary is 1/2 – 2/3 height of subject, 60° down, 45° to the left

object is 1/2 subject, 80° down

we’re still learning all of the different styles of color scheme. it seems simple enough. Then you try to put it together and its not quite as easy as i thought

traditional color scheme – calla lily with blue rush

This is made up of subject (tall straight flower), susbject (shorter flower) and object (short flower to right)

The subject is pretty straight

The secondary is shorter than usual (about 1/2 subject length), to create dimension, it can be shorter than the leaves. Be careful no to lean too far forward

The object should be shorter than secondary.

The subject group has three leaves

The secondary group has two leaves

The object group has three leaves

Leaves are staggered a little, but stems are tight up against the flower stem. Leaf stems are cut short. this helps in placing the leaves to “stand” rather then go to the side.

three of the leaves should be larger than the others. These leaves are placed behind the subject, in the secondary position (to the left at 25°) and at the object position to the right.

pork chops (no apple sauce)

i made pork chops and apple sauce for my family for dinner the other night. i think i’ve finally got the timing down pretty well for these thick cup chops (5min one side, 3.5 the other, then sear the sides…let rest)

so, i got some extra chops so joe and I could have a weekend dinner…pork chops, asparagus, and sweet potato fries. First attempt at sweet potato fries and it was pretty much a winner. par cook the fries in the microwave. heat oil, and toss fries in baking powder before frying…sprinkle with kosher salt.

its been a long time since we had benedict…i don’t know why. its so delicious. mmm..joe’s hollandaise!

mushrooms

these little mushrooms appeared in the garden after a night of drizzle, then were totally dead by mid-day…so the next night when it rained, i was sure to get some pics as soon as i woke up. They’re only about 1.5″ tall.

sensei let us choose what style and materials today. that’s always stressful. I decided to try a style we hadn’t done in a year – heika slanting style

you can’t really see what’s going on here, so i’ll have to do some captioning on this pic

tall vase styles are always more challenging - and i’ll admit – i totally forgot what was going on here.

secondary = 1/2 subject

tall filler is close to subject length, and angled forward

all stems come from front left quadrant
